Future of Web Design

I am very much looking forward to the Future of Web Design conference in New York, which will be taking place in November. I’ve been kicking myself for missing Event Apart, Boston since June, so when the opportunity arose to hit up FOWD, I jumped on it quickly.
Through the magic of twitter microblogging, I found out about […]

Day Trip: Governors Island

A few weekends ago, at the suggestion of New York magazine, we took an afternoon jaunt to Governors Island,  an island located 800 yards from Manhattan. It was a military base for two centuries, and in 2003 the federal government sold most of the Island to the people of New York for one dollar. The island […]

Fire-Foxy Lady

When visiting Brand New again this week, I came across a redesign that I actually had not even noticed. Mozilla Firefox, the web browser of choice among most of my colleagues and peers, has redesigned their icon for version 3.5. This is a perfect example of how subtle changes to a design may not be noticeable right away, but evoke […]

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Limpet

It’s that time again! I was at a very odd juncture in time, indeed, in which I found myself without much to talk about (at least that’s what my beef would say). Possible blog topics included boy wizards (July 15th!), the mating habits of the migratory skipe, and the difference between cormorants and diving ducks (does anyone know?). […]

Fontified

I tend to be somewhat weary of “DIY” websites or applications as they pertain to all things design. There are tons of apps out there that allow people to do all sorts of things that they have no formal training in. While this can certainly be convenient and fun for the non-designers out there, the […]

Apple Fights Back

Apple has recently released a new ad in response to the Microsoft laptop hunter ads. The ad is called Elimination and it’s a reminder of why owning a Mac is better than owning a PC. I think it’s a great advertising piece created by TBWA\Media Arts Lab.
Here’s another example of a great advertisement by BMW.
Ads like these bring a smile to my face […]

Fun With Photoshop Brushes

In my spare time lately, I’ve been experimenting with creating artwork in Photoshop and Illustrator. I finally took the time to download updated drivers for my Wacom Tablet (Graphire4 4×5  —  a nice entry-level tablet for the price) and have been having a blast getting reacquainted with it.
I’ve never been overflowing with raw illustration talent, and lately I’ve been playing a lot […]

Great Scott!

I am a bit of a compulsive lender. If I’m into something, there’s a good chance I’ll try to eventually hand it over to a friend in hopes of getting them into it too. The only problem with this is every so often, I forget what exactly I’ve lent out and end up losing some of my favorite books, DVDs, […]

Acrobat and OCR (optical character recognition)

Apparently Adobe Acrobat has had this capability for some time, but I’ve just discovered it has OCR text recognition. That means you can take a page that someone has scanned (basically a picture), where you would not be able to select or copy text, run OCR text recognition, and it turns it into a PDF where you CAN […]

Visual Bookmarking

In recent months, visual bookmarking sites have been popping up like crazy. For the most part, they contain no content aside from imagery and (usually) a link to each image’s original source  —  pure eye candy. So if you’re in need of some inspiration, there is clearly no shortage of reference material available. Any one of these resources […]
