Mad Men — The Real Story

Like most people, I am very excited that Mad Men is well into its third season. I got the first season for Christmas and have been hooked ever since. Aside from the gorgeous styling and art direction, the excellent acting and the great looking cast, by most counts, it’s a pretty realistic glimpse into a creative agency in 1960s […]

Embrace Change Or Become a Design-o-Saur

The always-controversial and unfailingly entertaining MTV VMAs struck once again two nights ago, and in honor of my not having watched it (favoring Facebook Updates for the juice  —  which, coincidentally, is what this blog entry references), I’m posting a clever piece of PR known as MTV’s 2009 International Rebrand Reel.
TV is changing and so is MTV

The Informant! Movie Posters

While walking to work on Park Avenue South the other day I noticed something peeking out from behind the buildings. On the side of a building where movie poster advertisements are painted was a poster for the new movie The Informant! I immediately noticed it because of the hand drawn type and illustration. The posters normally painted there are […]

Opening Film Titles — An Underrated Design Element

I recently came across The Movie Title Stills Collection put together by Christian Annyas and it got me thinking about the influence design makes on the viewer during the opening title sequence, ultimately displaying the true identity of a movie. As I looked through Christian’s collection, I realized that so many of my favorite films often mirror the way I perceive the opening […]

UP!

I actually did not think I was going to like this movie this much (that is, enough to write an entry about it).
In case you haven’t seen it, open a new window on your browser and run a search on your local movie theater. Now, continue reading.
UP is about an old man trying to have an adventure in South […]

Terrible Yellow Eyes

I have always loved the illustrations and stories by Maurice Sendak, especially his book Where the Wild Things Are. I cannot wait to see David Eggers’ screenplay adaptation of the book in the film directed by Spike Jonze, as Rick posted about before. Sendak’s stories and illustrations have inspired so many people that I was excited when […]

Old Vegas

If you ever go to Las Vegas, you must visit Downtown Vegas, or in other words, “Old Vegas.” The atmosphere and vibe is very different from the strip. You get a feel for what it was like back in the day, a gritty rough and tough city; not that sugar coated exploding volcano water show a few miles away.

Send a Simpson

I thought this was a fun piece of news: the Simpsons are now official stamps! Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie have been lovingly characterized in first-class postage.
“This is the biggest and most adhesive honor ‘The Simpsons’ has ever received,” creator Matt Groening said. What a great tribute!

Why Oh Why Did They Change To SyFy?

Yesterday marked the transition for SciFi  —  a science fiction based cable channel for those that don’t know  —  from its old identity to a new one. This has caused something of a stir since they first broke the news of this change back in March. The reason? Well, you can probably tell by now from the large image directly above this […]

9: More Than Just a Number (or “no” in German)

I always thought that I was attracted to Tim Burton’s movies because of his quirkiness (not to mention the fact that Johnny Depp has been in 6 of his films), but then I realized it might be the typography on the posters and DVD covers for his films that I like. I made this realization when I saw the promo for […]
