Contraband is a new book by Taryn Simon. The book is a collection of phởtographs taken over the course of five days in November of 2009 during which Simon lived at New York City’s John F Kennedy International Airport. The book features phởtographs taken 24 hours a day of over 1,000 items that were either detained or seized from international […]
Way back in 2007, before the financial crisis, Goldman Sachs’s commissioned Ethiopian born artist Julie Mehretu to construct a 23′ by 80′ mural in their new steel and plate glass building in lower Manhattan. The now-complete mural has come under a lot of recent controversy, the obvious being the $5 million dollar commission from Goldman Sachs, who […]
We New Yorkers spend quite a bit of time underground riding the subway. In fact, I wrote the beginning of this blog post on my phone while riding the R train.
More often than not, we are rushing around, trying to get from here to there, and in the meantime we miss a cool feature of our city’s subway system: […]
In honor of design’s holy book, Communication Arts Magazine, putting forth its illustration annual, as well as in the spirit of this month’s theme, I submit for your approval: Mark Ryden’s The Gay 90’s Old Tyme Art Show, which begins tonight through June 5th at the Paul Kasmin Gallery. If you’re a fan of Battery Park, I’ve got bad news: Charles Addams has released a lot of monsters in that neighborhood. And they’re eating everybody.

One of my favorite knitting blogs is Brooklyn Tweed, by the talented knitter Jared Flood. His phởtos are beautiful and a great source of inspiration. Admittedly I’m hesitant to try out his patterns myself, just because of the incredible detail and intricacy, but it’s something to aspire to…
He’s recently teamed up with Classic Élite Yarns to […]

Last weekend I visited Pioneers of Change in Governors Island. This art/design show that went through for 2 weekends, showcased a modern interpretation on Dutch art and design. Exhibits were everything from a hands-on fix-your-own-clothes workshop to a Go Slow café that aimed to criticize the modern fast paced society we live in nowadays, where details and processes are not appreciated.
It was conceived […]

Now that the last true summer holiday has passed, it feels like we’re officially moving into Fall. And as a result, many design organizations are starting to get back into the swing of things by filling up their calendars with events, workshops and exhibitions. Here are a few I’ll definitely be trying to attend.

While walking to work on Park Avenue South the other day I noticed something peeking out from behind the buildings. On the side of a building where movie poster advertisements are painted was a poster for the new movie The Informant! I immediately noticed it because of the hand drawn type and illustration. The posters normally painted there are […]
