When the cat’s away…

Broadway plays have recently become a favorite pastime of mine, so I was very intrigued when I heard that Debbie Allen would be directing a revival of the Tennessee Williams play Cat on a Hot Tin Roof , which is now playing at the Broadhurst Theater. This rendition boasts an all-star cast including Terrence Howard, James Earl Jones, Phylicia Rashad and Anika Noni Rose.

Terrence Howard makes his Broadway and stage debut as Brick, an alcoholic former football star unable to cope with the abundance of lies and deceit he’s surrounded by. He did a pretty good job but I don’t think I heard a word he said during the entire 2 hours and 45 minutes. I just stared at those gorgeous eyes of his. And plus he spent the entire play dressed only in pajamas. Hmmmm.….

There may seem to be a bit of nepotism in play considering that Phylicia Rashad and Debbie Allen are sisters. However, Phylicia Rashad truly made the play. She is one of the best actresses I’ve ever had the pleasure of viewing. The cleverness of her craft truly shown through in her portrayal of Big Mama.

My favorite part of the night was after the play when I, along with many other fans, waited in the freezing cold and rain to scream, clap, take pictures and harass the actors for autographs. The person who clearly outshone the entire cast during this process was Anika Noni Rose who plays Maggie “the cat.” She signed every autograph, took every picture and was beyond gracious in doing so.

All in all, it was a lovely night with the exception that Terrence Howard may need to file assault charges against some of the women his bodyguards could not hold off. But, hey. I can’t blame those ladies. He’s so handsome.
